A Salento Itinerary

Salento Crafted – A Salento Itinerary in 3, 5 or 7 Days

Why this Salento itinerary is built around craft
Salento is the heel of Italy, the southern tip of Puglia. Most itineraries treat it as a beach run. This one is different: it starts in Lecce, the region's baroque city, gives one day to the artisans who still work here — ceramics, weaving, papier-mâché, stone — and only then moves to the coast. The craft day gives the trip a center; the sea gives it a close.
Every Persalia journey is designed from scratch. This route shows one way Salento can be paced; your version will follow your dates, your interests and how much you like to move.

Lecce: the first days
Lecce is a city of pale golden stone and baroque facades, best absorbed slowly: a first coffee, a walk through the old center, a late dinner. The point of the first day is not to "do" Lecce but to let it introduce itself. The base is Palazzo Daniele in Gagliano del Capo — a historic palazzo with a modern, artful mood, and the house that hosts the workshop.

A morning with Salento's artisans
The most characterful day of the trip. A hands-on session of two to three hours with local makers, either on the property or in their own ateliers: ceramics, weaving, embroidery, papier-mâché or stonework, depending on the season and what interests you. It is enough to give the day a memorable core without making it heavy. The afternoon stays free for a long lunch, a little shopping or rest.
Otranto and the masseria

From Lecce the route turns to the coast and to Masseria Montelauro, a 29-room farmhouse outside Otranto with handcrafted interiors and a clear Salento identity. Otranto itself is a walled town on the Adriatic — the old town, the cathedral with its mosaic floor, the harbor at golden hour. The masseria has a spa and a range of outdoor activities — snorkeling, diving, canoeing, horseback riding — so the days here can be as active or as still as you like.

How the days can be arranged
3 days
Day 1 — Arrive in Lecce, check in to Palazzo Daniele, stroll the baroque center and dine in the old town. Day 2 — Artisan workshop in the morning, then a long lunch or rest. Day 3 — Transfer to Masseria Montelauro, explore Otranto's old town and coastline, spa or an outdoor activity, dinner at the masseria.

5 days
Day 1 — Lecce arrival and a slow first evening. Day 2 — Workshop day, afternoon open. Day 3 — Move to Masseria Montelauro, stopping in Otranto for a first look at the coast. Day 4 — An active coast day: choose one of the masseria's activities. Day 5 — A calm beach morning or a short drive along the Adriatic, then an easy departure through the countryside.

7 days
Two hotels, two moods: Palazzo Daniele for culture and craft, then Masseria Montelauro for sun and sea. Day 1 — Lecce arrival. Day 2 — A full Lecce day: baroque architecture, slow lunch, boutiques. Day 3 — Artisan workshop or a second cultural experience tied to Lecce's makers. Day 4 — A deliberately quiet Lecce day. Day 5 — Transfer to the masseria; an afternoon of pool, gardens or coast. Day 6 — One outdoor activity: snorkeling, diving, canoeing or riding. Day 7 — A last breakfast and an unhurried departure.

Questions people ask about Salento
When is the best time to visit Salento?
May, June, September and early October. The sea is warm from June, and September is the calmest month for both Lecce and the coast. July and August are crowded and hot.

How do I get to Lecce?
Fly to Brindisi, about 40 minutes by car, or to Bari, about two hours. Lecce also has a train station on the line from Bari. For the coast around Otranto a car or private transfer is best.

Is three days enough for Salento?
Three days covers Lecce, the workshop and one day on the coast. Five adds an active day and a slower ending. Seven gives Lecce the time it deserves and turns the coast into a proper stay rather than a stop.

What is a masseria?
A masseria is a fortified farmhouse, typical of Puglia, often set among olive groves. Many have been restored as small hotels. Staying in one is the most Puglian way to experience the countryside.
