A Northern Italy Road Trip: Rome to the Veneto – 10 Days
Why this northern Italy road trip skips the famous cities
This northern Italy road trip was designed for a couple with a date to keep at the far end of it - an appointment in Bassano del Grappa on the last day - and ten days to get there from Rome. The question was not where to go, but how to make the road itself the reason for the trip.
So it avoids the obvious axis. No Florence, no Venice. Instead it follows the older, quieter line up the middle of the country: the places Italians drive to on a weekend, and most visitors never reach at all.
Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio: the first two nights
It begins an hour north of Rome, at a tower-villa in the countryside outside Orvieto. Two nights there, with a morning at Civita di Bagnoregio - the village on its crumbling spur of rock, reached only by a footbridge - and an afternoon underground, in the caves and tunnels the Etruscans cut beneath Orvieto two and a half thousand years ago. The cathedral, of course. But the cathedral is the part everyone knows.
The Tuscany Road trip: Val d’Orcia, Bagno Vignoni and Pienza
Then the Tuscany stretch of the road trip: the Val d’Orcia, at its softest in September. The thermal pools at Bagno Vignoni, where the water still runs warm through the medieval square; Pienza, built as one man’s idea of a perfect town; a long lunch, and roads that look exactly like the photographs because they are the photographs.
Lucca and Mantova: the quiet surprise
North again through Montecatini and Lucca - a walk on the walls, a coffee inside them - and on to Mantova, which is the trip’s quiet surprise. Two nights in a city ringed by three lakes, with the Gonzaga palaces, a boat across the water to see it as it was meant to be seen, a theatre where Mozart played at thirteen, and the Renaissance town of Sabbioneta half an hour away, built from nothing to prove a point. Dinner is Lambrusco, the real kind.
Bassano del Grappa: the end of the road
The last day is the drive to Bassano: the covered wooden bridge over the Brenta, a grappa tasted where it was invented, the car returned, and the appointment kept.
How a 10-day Italy road trip itinerary is paced
Ten days, four bases, and never more than two hours on the road. Every stay was chosen for the stretch of country it sat in - a tower among olive trees, a farmhouse with a pool in the Val d’Orcia, a hotel a short walk from the Mantova lakes - rather than for the town’s name.
Planning your own Italy road trip
Every Persalia journey is designed from scratch. This one show what happens when a fixed date and a rental car turn into a route through the Italy most people drive straight past. If you can see yourself in this journey, start your inquiry and let’s shape it around you.
