A Family Trip to Italy: Sicily to Rome – 17 Days

Why this family trip to Italy was designed this way
This family trip to Italy was designed for three generations travelling together, with a wish that shaped the whole route: to stand in the village their grandparents had left for America, and to see the Italy that came before and after it.

Taormina: a gentle start in Sicily
It begins in Taormina, where the pace is set gently. The ancient Greek theatre with Etna behind it, a morning on the volcano itself, and afternoons that end at the beach below the town by cable car. Nothing is rushed in the first days; a family finds its rhythm before it finds its way.

Cefalù and Palermo, understood through food
From Taormina the road runs west along the coast to Cefalù and on to Palermo, where the city is best understood through its food. A street food walk, the Norman Palace and its golden chapel, and a walking tour that tells the city’s harder modern history honestly -the kind of thing a family with older children remembers long after the beaches.

The Cilento: the village the family came from
Then the crossing to the mainland, and the heart of the trip: two days in the Cilento, inland from the coast, in the village where the family’s story began. Time with a local guide who knew where to look, and time with no plan at all. This is the part no itinerary can fully write in advance, and the part that mattered most.

The Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Rome
The Amalfi Coast follows as the reward -a base in Amalfi, a day on the water by private boat, the walk to Atrani, an afternoon above it all in Ravello. Then Pompeii, taken slowly with a guide rather than in a crowd, and finally Rome, where the trip closes with a food walk through Trastevere and Campo de’ Fiori, which is how Rome should be met for the first time: at a table.

Where a family of three generations stayed
Seventeen days, four bases, and one hotel change every few days rather than every night. Stays were chosen for the family, not the photograph: a seafront hotel with room to spread out in Taormina, a quiet countryside hotel in the Cilento, a small hotel in the centre of Amalfi that could be walked out of straight into the town.

Planning your own family vacation in Italy
Every Persalia journey is designed from scratch. This one shows how a family vacation in Italy can hold a real purpose at its centre and still leave room for the sea, the food, and the slow days in between. If you can see yourself in this journey, start your inquiry and let’s shape it around you.
